RALEIGH, N.C. … Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation today announced that in its ongoing effort to support virtualized environments, it is the first power management company to offer protection software fully tested and compatible with VMware’s new ESXi (4.0) virtualization software. With this compatibility, Eaton’s NetWatch 5.0 and Network Shutdown Module 3.20 allows virtual machines and host servers connected to an Eaton uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to be safely shut down when necessary, protecting the data integrity on the computer or server being shut down.
VMware® ESXi is the next generation, operating system-independent hypervisor that is designed to make enterprise-grade virtualization easy to deploy for small and large enterprises. If an extended power outage occurs, Eaton’s software gracefully shuts down multiple virtual machines sequentially, allowing time for data to be properly saved before shutting down the host server and removing power from the devices.
“As a VMware Technology Alliance Partner, Eaton has been on the forefront of maximizing compatibility of our protection software for the virtual environment,” said Hervé Tardy, vice president and general manager, Eaton Distributed Power Quality Business Unit. “The shutdown features of our software products raise the bar in user friendliness and intelligent management of VMware’s ESXi virtual machines. Our software together with our energy-efficient extended runtime UPSs help to advance our customers’ green Information Technology (IT) initiatives and give IT and data center managers confidence that their virtual infrastructure is well protected.”
By supporting previous VMware products such as ESX, 3.0, 3.5 UT and U3, Eaton’s connectivity software makes it easy for IT administrators to manage their virtual environments. Now, just a single shutdown agent needs to be installed per physical server regardless of the number of virtual machines hosted on the server.
As part of Eaton’s PowerChain Management® solutions, NetWatch 5.0 UPS connectivity software is a critical component of Eaton’s network shutdown solution. NetWatch allows users to configure up to 255 network clients to monitor the activity of a single UPS and acts as a network-monitoring tool through any network management card from Eaton. NetWatch’s robust configuration options also enable scheduled shutdown and restart operations and the ability to receive user notifications.
Network Shutdown Module 3.20 adds sophisticated redundancy management schemes, mass configuration and deployment capabilities as well as an IT-centric view to manage power at the server level. It is compatible with any Eaton single-phase UPS.
